Concert Review
Jazz fusion icon Marcus Miller delivers an electrifying performance at the TSF Jazz Chantilly Festival 2025, turning the elegant surroundings of Chantilly into a playground of groove, funk, and masterful musicianship.
Known worldwide as one of the greatest bass players of all time, Miller leads his outstanding band through a tight 72-minute set packed with deep grooves, dazzling solos, and sophisticated arrangements. From the opening notes of “Red Baron,” originally written by Billy Cobham, the performance immediately sets a high-energy tone with powerful bass lines and explosive band interplay.

The original composition “Untamed” showcases Miller’s ability to blend jazz fusion with modern funk elements. His signature slap bass technique drives the song forward while the band adds layers of keyboards, saxophone, and dynamic percussion.
A special highlight of the show arrives with “Mr. Pastorius,” a tribute connected to the legacy of Miles Davis and the great bass tradition that shaped modern jazz. The piece becomes a musical conversation between Miller and his band, demonstrating both technical precision and spontaneous improvisation.

The groove continues with “Run for Cover,” originally made famous by David Sanborn, where the rhythm section locks into a powerful funk rhythm that gets the crowd moving.
Later in the set, “Gorée (Go-ray)” introduces a more atmospheric and reflective moment, inspired by African musical influences that have long been part of Miller’s sound. The concert builds toward a high-energy finale with “Blast,” a thrilling closing piece filled with intense solos and rhythmic fireworks.

The result is a masterclass in jazz fusion performance, highlighting Marcus Miller’s extraordinary musicianship and the tight chemistry of his touring band.
